Ontario Unveils $260 Million Fund to Train Workers for High-Demand Careers

In a bold step to address labour shortages and prepare more people for in-demand careers, the Ontario government has launched the sixth round of its Skills Development Fund (SDF) with $260 million in new funding available.

This round marks the largest single investment since the program began in 2021 and is part of the province’s broader commitment to build a future-ready workforce. The SDF supports innovative training projects that help workers gain skills and find meaningful employment — especially in industries facing critical shortages.

Who Can Apply?

  • Eligible applicants include:

  • Employers and business associations

  • Trade unions and training providers

  • Indigenous Band offices and service organizations

  • Non-profits, municipalities, and hospitals

Applicants must submit proposals through the Transfer Payment Ontario portal. The application deadline is October 1, 2025.

Priority Areas

The 2025 funding round targets:

  • Healthcare

  • Construction & skilled trades

  • Manufacturing

  • Automotive & advanced technology sectors

Projects must be focused on equipping people with the practical skills, certifications, and experience needed to succeed in the job market.

Importantly, the program encourages initiatives that support underrepresented groups, including women, racialized communities, newcomers, Indigenous people, and persons with disabilities.

Real-World Impact

Since launching the Skills Development Fund, the province has invested more than $1.4 billion, helping tens of thousands of workers gain job-ready skills. This sixth round brings the total projected investment to $2.5 billion over three years.

“This is about creating opportunities where they’re needed most,” said David Piccini, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “We’re investing in real solutions — ones that support workers, strengthen communities, and grow our economy.”

In the previous round alone, over 4,800 jobseekers were supported through projects across hospitality, construction, and healthcare — with many participants transitioning into full-time roles.
